Fissure Sealants in Western Sydney

A quick, painless protective coating for the deep grooves of back teeth — one of the most effective ways to prevent decay in children and adults at our Ropes Crossing Village clinic.

Seal Out Decay Before It Starts

The back teeth (molars and premolars) have deep fissures and grooves on their chewing surfaces that are notoriously difficult to clean properly, even with good brushing. Food and bacteria become trapped in these grooves, making them the most common site for decay — particularly in children whose enamel is still maturing.

Fissure sealants are a thin, tooth-coloured resin coating applied to the chewing surfaces of back teeth to fill and seal these deep grooves. Once sealed, the surface becomes smooth and easy to clean — significantly reducing the risk of decay developing in these vulnerable areas. The procedure is completely painless, requires no drilling and is completed in a single appointment.

Sealants are most commonly applied to children's permanent molars soon after they erupt (typically ages 6–7 and 11–13) but can also benefit adults with deep, unrestored grooves. They are one of the most cost-effective preventive investments in dentistry — a sealant costs a fraction of a filling, and prevents the tooth damage entirely.

Prevent Decay Before It Happens

Fissure sealants are one of the simplest, most effective preventive treatments we offer — especially for children.

No Drilling, No Anaesthetic

Fissure sealants are completely non-invasive. We clean the tooth surface, apply a mild etching agent, then paint on the sealant and cure it with a light — done in minutes with no discomfort.

Dramatically Reduces Decay Risk

Studies show fissure sealants reduce the risk of decay in sealed teeth by up to 80%. For children who are prone to cavities or who have deep fissures, sealants can prevent years of dental treatment down the track.

Ideal Timing for Kids

We recommend sealants soon after permanent molars erupt — around ages 6–7 for first molars and 11–13 for second molars. Applying sealants to newly erupted teeth is the most effective window for protection.

Long-lasting Protection

Properly applied sealants can last 5–10 years. We check them at every routine appointment and can reapply if any areas have worn away — ensuring continuous protection.

Fissure Sealants — Your Questions Answered

We recommend sealants as soon as the permanent back teeth erupt — typically the first molars around age 6–7, and the second molars around age 11–13. Early application is the most effective, as it protects the tooth from the moment it's vulnerable.
Not at all. The procedure is completely painless — no injection, no drilling. We clean the tooth, apply a mild acidic gel for a few seconds to help the sealant bond, rinse and dry, then apply the sealant and harden it with a curing light. The whole process takes just a few minutes per tooth.
With normal use, sealants typically last 5–10 years. We check them at every routine appointment and can touch up or reapply any areas that have worn. Sealants can chip or wear faster in patients who grind their teeth.
Yes. Adults with deep, unrestored fissures that have never developed decay can benefit from sealants. If you have teeth that have never had fillings but have very deep grooves, ask us whether sealants would be appropriate for you.
The Child Dental Benefits Schedule (CDBS) covers fissure sealants for eligible children. Many private health extras policies also cover them under preventive dental. Bring your health fund card and we'll check via HICAPS on the day.
